MY DEBUT AS MARIA STUARDA

Palau de Les Arts, Valencia

10, 13, 16, 19, 22 December
At the end of a year that has given me outstanding emotions on equally outstanding stages, I’m back in my beloved Valencia to debut as Maria Stuarda in Donizetti’s masterpiece of the same name. It’s a great honour for me to take on the responsibility of the principal roles in the full cycle of the Tudor Queens, and for this I’d like to thank the Palau de Les Arts and also the Spanish audience who have been following me with gratifying affection and admiration since the start of my career.

The creative team for this Maria Stuarda is the same as for last year’s Anna Bolena, with stage direction entrusted to Jetske Mijnssen’s flair while the conductor is Maestro Maurizio Benini, with whom I’ve had the privilege of working on several of Donizetti’s works

Donizetti's Tudor Trilogy continues...

With just a few days to go before this debut, I’m firmly convinced that the dramatic structure, the beauty of the music, and the marvellous romantic atmosphere of this opera are attuned to my own nature and to the lyric nature of my voice. Maria Stuarda is a sombre tragedy, previously immortalised by Schiller, which Donizetti’s music fills with notes that have an intense emotional impact. There is a clash between state interest and matters of the heart, creating a mirror effect that makes you reflect while being enchanted by Donizetti’s music. Its theatrical force is evident; a direct result of the confrontation between two queens and of the opera being concentrated into only two acts. The performance lasts just over two hours, but that’s enough for Donizetti to outline the historical and political background to the score, the conflict between Catholics and Protestants and the conflict between the two queens over the same man. And it is the two queens of the opera, Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, who take their place in the immortal gallery of noble female heroines whose remarkable lives are destined to end in tragedy. The music casts the spotlight on them, delivering them to their central roles in history and on stage.
