MADAMA BUTTERFLY IN PARIS

performances on 14, 17, 22, 25, 28 September / 1, 6 October
I’m delighted to announce my upcoming role as Madama Butterfly at the Opéra Bastille, a theatre where I’m also making my debut, in this thirty-year-old production by Bob Wilson. The American stage director calls for a Cio-Cio-San who is heart-rending yet full of dignity. If Puccini, with his music, created in Butterfly a woman with a unique personality in the history of opera, Wilson added to the sublime music with a tale that allows the audience to enter more deeply into the soul of this woman who has been humiliated and tricked. He subtracts rather than adding, creating the effect that is typical of his approach to theatre, enriched with costumes by Frida Parmeggiani, choreography inspired by Japanese Butoh and skilful use of lighting. Another reason to be satisfied is that I’m singing at last under the baton of Speranza Scappucci, a musician I’ve known for many years and whom I greatly esteem.
I intend to give everything in terms of artistic sensitivity, beyond the demanding vocal role, ready to celebrate the Puccini centenary with this Butterfly, in “his” beloved Paris, which has entered the hearts of opera-lovers all over the world just as he made us see and love it with La Bohème.
