Eleonora Buratto
is one of the most highly acclaimed
lyric sopranos in the world.

Her career began in 2009 when she sang as Creusa in Demofoonte, conducted by Riccardo Muti at the Salzburg Festival, Opéra Garnier and the Ravenna Festival. In the following years she sang under Maestro Muti as Susanna in the opera I Due Figaro by Mercadante, as Norina in Don Pasquale, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra, Alice in Falstaff and Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro.

At the start of 2015 she was Corinna at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam in Il Viaggio a Reims, directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Stefano Montanari, after which her international career continued to develop. That same year she sang for the first time both as Liù and as Countess Almaviva and she also inaugurated the Teatro San Carlo season in Naples singing as Micaela in Carmen conducted by Zubin Mehta.

 

Since 2016 she has made other debuts which have become signature roles in her repertoire, such as Mimì at the Liceu in Barcelona, Donna Anna at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Elettra in Idomeneo at the Teatro Real in Madrid (available worldwide on Dvd and Bd by Opus Arte) and Luisa Miller once again at the Liceu. She has regularly returned, amongst other theatres, to the Teatro Real in Madrid, Liceu in Barcelona, Lyric Opera in Chicago, Dutch National Opera, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House and has sung in concert seasons and prestigious festivals, including Perm, where in 2019 she sang for the first time under conductor Teodor Currentzis, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino where she sang Mahler conducted by Daniele Gatti, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for Rossini's Stabat Mater and the Verdi Requiem and Teatro San Carlo in Naples with the Vier letzte Lieder conducted by Michele Mariotti. Other concert activities, which she particularly enjoys, include taking part in the celebrations for the anniversary of Rossini's death singing in Luxembourg and Vienna in the Petite Messe Solennelle conducted by Gustavo Gimeno (the CD was released by Pentatone in 2019).

In the early months of 2020 she was due to debut as Fiordiligi in Tokyo and Rusalka in Amsterdam (the first Italian soprano to sing the full opera). Unfortunately all productions were cancelled or postponed as a result of the health emergency.

On June 28th 2020 she sang in the Donizetti Requiem in Bergamo in a concert to commemorate the victims of the pandemic. The performance, which was broadcast live on Rai 1, took place in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic. Following this she took part in three gala performances at the Festival dell’Arena di Verona, including a Verdi gala concert with Francesco Meli and Luca Salsi. The trio with Meli and Salsi reunited in August, accompanied by pianist Davide Cavalli, for a concert at the National Archeological Park of Scolacium.

In autumn 2020 she made her role and theatre debut as Elvira in Ernani in a concert performance conducted by Michele Mariotti as part of the Verdi Festival. In the same edition of the Festival she sang in the Verdi Requiem under conductor Roberto Abbado. On 7th December she was amongst the protagonists of the performance entitled “To see again the stars” at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

In January 2021 she sang for the first time as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in a stage performance at Teatro alla Scala, streamed on Raiplay. The following month she sang as Elvira in Ernani at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, streamed on the theatre webtv. In March 2021 she sang again as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in a stage performance at the Teatro Regio in Turin, conducted by Riccardo Muti. Again conducted by Muti at the Teatro Regio in Turin, she sang in Verdi's Quattro pezzi sacri. The same month she sang for the first time as Desdemona in Otello by Verdi at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcellona, under conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

Noteworthy engagements of 2021 include debut performances as Aida conducted by Muti at the Arena di Verona Opera Festival and as Anaï in Moïse et Pharaon at the Rossini Opera Festival. She then sang at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia in the Verdi Requiem conducted by Daniele Gatti., at the Wiener Staatsoper as Alice and the Teatro Real in Madrid as Mimì, one of her signature roles.

At the beginning of 2022 she performed a concert at the Teatro Sociale in her hometown of Mantua conducted by Sesto Quatrini; a series of Rossini concerts at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under conductor Antonio Pappano (the recording was awarded the International Classical Music Awards 2023 in the “Choral Music” category) and the Verdi Requiem conducted by Daniele Gatti at the Théâtre des Champs-Élyséese. In March she debuted as Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; in August as Desdemona in Rossini’s Otello at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. The other engagements of 2022 included La Bohème at the Met and Wiener Staatsopera, Falstaff again at the Wiener Staatsoper and two more debuts: in autumn 2022 she sang for the first time as Anna Bolena at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia and as Elisabetta in Don Carlo at the MET. She closed her extraordinary year singing once again as Elisbetta in Don Carlo at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under conductor Daniele Gatti.

At the beginning of 2023 she produced her first Butterfly Gala, performing a concert at the Teatro Pavarotti Freni in Modena in support of the association Debra Südtirol – Alto Adige which assists those known as “butterfly children”. Then, as the Global Ambassador for Tebaldi100, she held a recital at the Teatro Verdi in Busseto in memory of Renata Tebaldi. She made her debut as Antonia in Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Teatro alla Scala and was again Mimì in La bohème.New York Metropolitan Opera.

In the second half of 2023 she sang as Madama Butterfly at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, as Desdemona in Munich and debuted as Suor Angelica at the Wiener Staatsoper and as Maria Stuarda in Valencia. Her 2024 started in Venice, as the protagonist of the New Year Concert at Teatro La Fenice and will continue with her as Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro alla Scala, her debut as Tosca at the Bayerische Staatsoper and with a Belcanto Concert at the Rossini Opera Festival.

She was awarded the Abbiati Prize by the Italian Association of Music Critics as “Best Singer of 2021”. In September 2023 she was the soprano soloist in the recording of the Rossini Messa di Gloria with Antonio Pappano conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which won the Abbiati award for discography.

On 27th December 2022 she was nominated Cavaliere al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by President Mattarella. The honour was bestowed upon her on Republic Day, 2nd June 2023, after she sang the Italian national anthem during the procession at the Imperial Forums.
