Eleonora Buratto has emerged onto the international opera stage as “the most precious and complete soprano that the Italian school has produced in recent years”

(Il Foglio, 2022).

Her interpretations are seen as a point of reference in a repertoire that ranges from Belcanto to Puccini. Her career progression has been gradual but unstoppable, from her start as Creusa in Demofoonte conducted by Riccardo Muti, to her leading roles in recent years in the most prestigious theatres worldwide.

The last two seasons saw her star in the 2024 New Year Concert at La Fenice and sing as Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at Teatro alla Scala, as Tosca (debut) at the Bayerische Staatsoper, in the worldwide broadcast of the concert for the opening of the 2024 Arena Festival, in the concert entitled Puccini secondo Muti broadcast worldwide from Lucca, in the Belcanto Concert at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Madama Butterfly at the Opéra Bastille, in a concert performance of Tosca for the opening of the season at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (new music director Daniel Harding’s inaugural concerts, also recorded for Deutsche Grammophon) and Amelia in Simon Boccanegra for the season opening at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Her 2025 begins as Mimì at the Metropolitan Opera and continues with the Verdi Requiem with the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Daniele Gatti, a staged production of Madama Butterfly at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival followed by a concert performance at the Philharmonie Berlin under Kirill Petrenko and Elisabetta (role debut) in Roberto Devereux at the Palau de Les Arts, completing the trilogy of “Tudor Queens” she debuted there, Tosca at the Puccini Festival, the Verdi Requiem conducted by Gianandrea Noseda at the Gstaad Festival Tent and Alice in Falstaff at the Semperoper Dresden, again under Daniele Gatti.

Over the course of her career — which has taken her to many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, from the Metropolitan Opera to La Scala, from the Teatro Real to the Wiener Staatsoper, from the Opera di Roma to the Bayerische Staatsoper — several standout milestones emerge. Chief among them is her long-standing collaboration with Maestro Riccardo Muti, with whom she has performed roles such as Susanna in Mercadante’s I Due Figaro, Norina in Don Pasquale, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra, Alice in Falstaff, Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Aida, as well as appearing with him in numerous concerts and gala performances. Her close artistic connection with Mozart’s Da Ponte operas, along with her acclaimed portrayal of Elettra in Idomeneo, re di Creta,  has established her as one of today’s most sought-after Mozart interpreters. A major turning point came in 2015 when she appeared as Corinna in Il Viaggio a Reims at the Dutch National Opera and as Micaela in Carmen under the baton of Zubin Mehta in the season-opening production at the Teatro di San Carlo. Since then, her repertoire has continued to expand, adding roles such as Liù, Mimì, Donna Anna, Luisa Miller, Elvira in Ernani, Desdemona in both Verdi’s and Rossini’s Otello, Anaï in Moïse et Pharaon, Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Elisabetta in Verdi’s Don Carlo, and Donizetti’s Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda.

Her symphonic repertoire has grown over the years, with concert performances and also recordings that include the Rossini Messa di Gloria at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia conducted by Antonio Pappano (a release that earned the 2023 International Classical Music Award for “Choral Music” and the Abbiati Award for Best Recording), the Requiem and Four sacred pieces by Verdi, the Mahler Symphony no. 4, the Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini conducted by Gustavo Gimeno (the latter released on cd by Pentatone in 2019). In 2020, when theatres were closed due to the pandemic, she performed the Donizetti Requiem in Bergamo before the President of Italy. Later that year, on 7th December, she appeared in A riveder le stelle, the special concert that opened the Teatro alla Scala season. Both events were broadcast to television audiences across Italy and around the world.

Her social commitment has led her to produce the Butterfly Gala in support of the non-profit organisation Debra Family which provides assistance for the so-called ‘butterfly children’. The first edition of the gala was held in 2023 at the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti Freni di Modena, and the second took place in autumn 2024 at the Teatro Sociale di Como, both with the backing of artist friends, the theatres involved and several patrons.

She is global Ambassador for “Tebaldi 100” and the Renata Tebaldi Museum in Busseto, and is involved in events honouring the memory of Renata Tebaldi.

She was awarded the Abbiati Prize by the Italian Association of Music Critics as “Best Singer of 2021” and has received several other awards, including the Pesaro Music Award, the Rossini d’oro, Premio Speciale Virna Lisi – Opera di Roma, Virgilio d’oro and Premio Illica 2025.

Her debut solo album, Indomita (Pentatone), was released in April 2025. Recorded the previous summer with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opera Carlo Felice Genova, conducted by Sesto Quatrini, the album features scenes from operas by Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi. Gramophone described it as “powerful stuff, and highly recommended.”

On 27th December 2022, she was granted the title Cavaliere al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by President Mattarella. The honour was bestowed upon her on Republic Day, 2nd June 2023, after she sang the Italian national anthem during the parade at the Imperial Forums.
